To the Walls, Watchmen
Bernice M Mercier
Called to a life of holiness; called to a life of obedience.
How are the members of the Body of Christ to live up to these
lofty Scriptural standards? How are these "walls"
of the Church, His Body, to be protected against worldliness,
compromise, and complacency? Who will warn the inhabitants
of impending danger or attack? And, who will guard the precious
flock of God?
The walls of the Church, His Body, suffer for want of "Watchmen."
"And I searched for a man among them who should build
up the wall and stand in the gap before me for the
land, that I should not destroy it; and I found no
one" Ezek 22:30 NAS.
In our day, the Lord is still searching.
Not all members of the Body of Christ enter a selfless life
of sacrificial service to God. Few there are who find the
place of constant communion with their Lord. Thus, He places
"Watchmen" within His Body.
The Lord's watchmen not only guard the walls, but they faithfully
listen for the Lord's voice. They seek His face and move within
the realm of His revealed will. As humble, yielded vessels,
the watchmen speak His Word alone. Their walk is illuminated
by His light, as it reveals the darkness of worldliness invading
the Church today.
The Watchmen are willing to blow the trump, to sound the
alarm; and to offer another opportunity to choose a better
way. These who stand in the gap may be men, women, or children,
but all are stirred by the needs that surround them. The Watchmen
care for the souls of those who have settled into apathy and
indifference. They reach out to those who have strayed, and
minister to their condition.
Calling from the walls, they urge repentance and a life of
holiness regardless of the rejection or criticism which inevitably
follows them. They throw off all that hinders or would drive
a wedge between themselves and the Lord in order to guard
the walls of the city. It is the cry of the Watchmen that
releases healing to the Body of Christ.
"I have set watchmen upon your walls, O Jerusalem,
who shall never hold their peace day nor night: you
